For the field outing that has come to be common in the Society's Friday meeting schedule, the group journeyed to Gladwyne, in suburban Philadelphia, to visit Woodmont, the 72-acre estate and now museum of the Rev. Major Jealous Divine, better known as Father Divine. Docents provided tours of the mansion, the grounds and outer buildings, and the striking mausolem in which Father Divine is interred. Afterwards we were hosted to a screening of film footage of scenes from his life and ministry and the story of the International Peace Mission movement he founded. At the close of our visit, the group posed for a photograph with Mother Divine [the former Edna Rose Ritchings], who carries on the legacy she and her late husband established. The museum generously makes available literature and artifacts of the movement. Reproduced on the blog is a publication of an interview conversation between Father Divine and the Rev. Dr. Lewis Pethrus, a pastor from Sweden who desired to gain insight into the man and the movement that had achieved international notability.
